Trees & treehouses

When we do something, it seems like we do it big.  In addition to the kitchen remodel, house guests and everything else going on, Rob decided that the creaky old trees in our back yard should come down.  These trees sway back and forth in every storm and keep us up at night with just the idea that the might come down.  so....down they came!

And with the trees down....there's lots of room for treehouses!

Quiet

It's late and I'm supposed to be doing work but instead I'm stuck on pinterest wasting my time looking at paint colors.  It's quiet in the house, actually quiet.  The kind of quiet that is like a sigh of relief.  Another weekend over.  We got so much done this weekend that I can't believe it was only 48 hours long.  Why can't weekends be just one more day long?  Seems like that extra day is just what we all need to enjoy the family and slow down.  The computer next to my laptop is scrolling thru pictures from the last 5 years and it's like a trip down memory lane. One just popped up from Christmas 2010....I had no idea I was pregnant with kenedi and was drinking a beer in my skinny jeans.  How life changes in a year.  That little bundle of fun is rolling and finding her toes, her fists, and her angry voice.

Martial Arts

Will spends time each week at Aim High working on marital arts...breaking boards and learning respect.  He's doing a great job listening to his instructors and learning lots of great skills.

The remodel continues...

Back to school & work

Even though I officially returned to work the week before the Christmas break, it really felt like yesterday was my first day back.   I had a lot of fun staying home with baby Kenedi.  It's so fun to have a laid back schedule.  But I find it hard to be on baby time when they are so young.  I loved the snuggles and the playing and the falling asleep in my arms.  And sure, I got lots of little projects done around the house.  But I am so bad at getting babies on the schedules that they really nees.  I swear Kenedi nursed every 90 minutes just because she could and would sleep for 30 minutes at a time at best.  In walks Katie and daycare and the  girl is eating 6 ounces at a time, sleep for 90 minute stretches and finally on a schedule.  A routine.  And for that, I am thankful.  Thankful that I could return to work so that someone could give my kids the routine they so badly need.  I just think it's hard for mommies to give out schedules because there are so many other things to get done and to do.  Especially with older kids.

Addi is SO excited to have Kenedi at daycare with her.  Beyond excited, jump in the car, seat belt on ready to go excited.  This sure beats the crying and tears we were getting each morning because she didn't want to leave Kenedi alone at home.

In honor of our first day back, the ladies of the house all dressed in black and white!

Windows and sheetrock

Rob and my dad made lots of progress over the long weekend.  Between trips to Home Depot and the dumpster they got new windows installed:

New insulation went into the walls and ceilings.

New pocket lights put in.  I am SOOOOO excited for the light that these puppies pour out.  Our house was so dark before with just lamp lighting in most rooms.

And then the plastic came down just in time to watch the Rose Bowl and the Ducks win.  It's beginning to look like a room...a big room with lots of lights!

The project begins

Once the chimney came out we had to move forward with our project.  Rob and I have both been so excited about actually starting the kitchen remodel.   And so the day after Christmas, as soon as we could technically take down the decorations, the work began.  And boy howdy....did it begin!
First the cabinets got cleared out
Then the walls started tumblin' down!
and the floor came up and that beautfiul linoleum that we worked so hard to cover a few years ago reared it's ugly head!
And then the wall was gone!  That there will be an island someday soon.
The plastic went up because the ceiling was coming down.  Oh the ceiling!  I think that the insulation has taken years off all of our lives.

We discovered that we had had a mini fire at some point in the light over the old sink.  Thank goodness for fire retardant insulation.
And here's a look at some of the wiring we found buried in the walls.  Um....is that to code?

We've learned a lot about the house.  Turns out the front part of the house, the living and dining area, was an addition,  You can tell by the roof line up in the attic and the changes in flooring.  The beams in the attic we also used when they poured the concrete forms for the house.  There has never been any insulation in any of our outside walls.  The holes were drilled for blown in insulation and then it never got blowed in....

We are also learning a lot about home remodels.  1...Basically...we could do little without my dad.  Rob's a good worker but I'm basically a grunt that can break down cabinets for the dumpster, by new appliances and sweep.  2...Patience is your best friend. I didn't think that the dust would be this bad but oh the dust!  It's really inevitable and totally makes sense it's just that when you are dusting things off twice a day you really get an idea for how much dust there is.  3...Rob and I struggle with decisions.  Enough said.  We can't make them.  It's not that one of us doesn't agree with the other it's just that the two of us can't decide on anything!  We are SOO excited though for the end result.  It's so much fun watching it all come together.
